SEVENTEEN

Ced barely spared her a glance before throwing himself onto the bed. The mattress bounced, creaking unhappily under his weight as his dagger swung awkwardly at his side. Why he still carried it, I didn’t know, he barely used it for scraping the dirt from under his fingernails.

“She’s still alive then?”

“Cedral.” Havric scowled as he shut the door, but Ced just shrugged, crossing his boots on what had once been the finest sheets my father could buy his demanding bride.

I smiled. Ced would have done the same if my stepmother was still alive, that was just how he was and he made no apologies for his actions. It was both the greatest and worst part of him. What had drawn me to him and what had driven me away.

“I was just saying-”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Havric said. “I’ve already listened to you going on about her for longer than anyone sane would have.”

Ignoring Havric, Ced turned my way and asked, “Why are you up here, anyway? Trying to make her look nice for the executioner?” He grinned at Sarilla, his top lip curling mockingly as she hugged her arms tighter about her legs. “Your family’s been looking real pretty since a crow pecked their eyes out.”

I started to say something to get him to stop attacking her, but I caught myself just in time. Why was I still trying to protect her? She deserved the worst Ced could sling her way and more.

“The king isn’t executing her,” I said instead, moving through the room in search of anything Sarilla might use to dry herself.

“He already knows that,” Havric said wearily. “We were watching from the back of the ballroom.”

“Apparently being the Lord of Lanlethe still merits some modicum of respect,” Ced muttered. “Why has he got you looking after her? Is he hoping you’ll get angry enough to see her off for him?”

It wasn’t the most unlikely notion Ced had ever come up with. The king was far from being above tormenting those under his rule, and he didn’t seem capable of killing her himself. Maybe he was hoping I would do it for him.

“She wouldn’t have made it far in the state she was in,” I said, the excuse ringing hollow even in my ears.

“So? Why are you doing it? Beastie here isn’t your concern.”

“She is as long as she has my memories.”

“Falon-”

“No. I don’t want to hear it. I need her alive. A rotting corpse is no use to anyone. Besides, I’m not letting her out of my sight until I get my memories back, so you can either help me or return to whatever tavern you just dragged yourself out of.”

Havric snorted as Ced looked as if he was about to try to defend himself. Before he could argue Havric said, “I suppose that means you’re joining the army in their march east?”

“Wherever she goes, I go.”

“They’re almost ready to leave. I’ll fetch your pack and meet you down by the gates when I’m ready too.
